Forward bank alerts by email

Each workspace has its own email address for bank alerts. Forward your banks' transaction alert emails to it from Gmail, and each one is read into your books without uploading a statement.

Forward your banks' transaction alert emails to your workspace's own address, and each one reaches your books without an upload.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Open Settings, Bank alerts, and copy your workspace's forwarding address.

    Open in the app

  2. In Gmail, add it as a forwarding address. Gmail's confirmation code shows on the Bank alerts page; enter it in Gmail.

  3. Create a Gmail filter on your bank's alert sender that forwards to the address.

  4. Check Received emails on the Bank alerts page to see what became of each alert.

    Open in the app

Which alerts are read

Transaction alerts from HDFC Bank, SBI and ICICI Bank are read. Each one lands on the bank or credit-card account whose institution names that bank and whose last 4 digits match the alert, so set both on the account in your chart of accounts. Your categorization rules then post it like any imported line. One-time passwords, offers and "statement ready" emails, mail from any other sender, and alerts for an account you have not set up are shown as ignored with the reason.

Keep the address private

The address is long and random so nobody can guess it. If it leaks, regenerate it on the Bank alerts page: the old address stops working at once, so add the new one in Gmail and point your filter at it.

Check it worked

Received emails on the Bank alerts page lists the last 20 emails that reached the address, with what became of each: imported, ignored and why, or failed and why. Gmail's own confirmation email shows there as ignored once its code has been shown to you.
